Special Services

Welcome

Special Services administers the federal TRIO programs. Initially, the federal government developed three educational opportunity programs in the 1960's. The programs were quickly nicknamed TRIO (for three). When more programs were added later, they and the original programs were still called TRIO programs even though the number of programs was no longer three.

The federal TRIO programs are designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. While student financial aid programs help students overcome financial barriers to higher education, TRIO Programs help students overcome class, social, academic and cultural barriers to higher education. Services and eligibility vary by program. TRIO serves students from middle school to post baccalaureate programs. Special Services has programs for:

  • Student Support Services (SSS) for undergraduate college students provides opportunities for students with inadequate high school preparation, cultural or economic disadvantages, or physical and other handicaps to advance in college work. The major focus is on students who are receiving financial aid and those who are first generation college students.
  • Upward Bound (UB) for ages 13 to 19 and Educational Talent Search (ETS) for ages 11 to 27 are pre-college preparatory programs designed to provide academic and non-academic assistance to junior high and high school students who have academic potential for college or some other type of post-secondary education.
  • Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) for military veterans provides assistance to veterans who need the skills and motivation to complete GED requirements to enroll and to succeed in post-secondary education. This program provides preparation for the GED, financial aid assistance, university admissions, referrals for VA affairs, and instruction in English, math, reading, computer science, and speech.
  • The Ronald E. McNair Program (McNair) for graduate students is designed to assist students in preparing for graduate study. The program provides academic counseling, tutoring, GRE test preparation, paid research internships, mentoring, and graduate application assistance.
